Personality

The first test I took was the color personality test. It told me that I was creative and emotional, always seeking fun and adventure. Even though, some of these results are correct, I don’t think that this test is credible at all. All I did was pick colors and it told me my personality. I don’t believe you can figure out a personality but the colors they like. The next test told me that I was an extrovert, emotional stable, and intelligent. I believe that this test was the most credible because it gave me a layout of my top 5 traits and I found those results to be most accurate. On the other two tests I got the label ESFJ. These are outgoing, friendly, caring, kind and sympathetic people. These two tests were more credible as well because they had 60 questions about what type of person you are. Some of the questions on each test were weirdly worded and hard to understand.

While I believe all these traits to be true about myself but I do not believe in personality tests. I think that the only real way to know someone’s personality is to get to know them personally; a test that takes 7 minutes is not going to be able to do that. Everyone has different personalities that encompass many traits in different categories and none of these tests take that into account. Overall, I think these tests did not give me any important information about myself and if I really wanted to know what traits I had, I would ask family and friends that know me well enough to give me accurate answers.

  1. Hi Ariana,

After reading multiple people’s blog posts, I decided to look into these personality tests as well. I agree with you that these tests all have some type of flaw to them. Picking a color to determine personality traits remind me of those silly news articles like cosmopolitan and teenvogue. Like you said, clicking random buttons on a screen should not be a way to determine anyones personality traits. People could easily lie about questions or answer them wrong. In class we learned about face validity tests and these quizzes demonstrated similar ideas that you can manipulate the answers if you want. We also learned in class, as you also mentioned, that you truly have to get to know someone to get a true idea about someones personality. Based on the setting a person is in, it can also change/shift someones personality as well. For example, I tend to be a very outgoing person; however, if I am in an environment that I feel uncomfortable in I will become more reserved and quiet. I do believe that once you get to know someone, you will truly know their personality. Although people make first impressions, that does not mean that is who they truly are. Even though these tests were not really scientific, they were fun to try out and see what personality traits you would get.

    Good job!!

  2. I definitely agree with you on the color tests Ariana. After taking it I did not feel like the test had actually assessed me and given me a response. The credibility of the test came into question when I found myself not relating to the assessments they gave me. It also had a few spelling mistakes on mine, which admittedly is not that big of a big deal but made me raise a few eye brows. I also agree with your opinion on personality tests because it is hard for a test to fully analyze and give results on someone’s personality in seven to ten minutes. People’s personalities and behaviors tend to change with their surroundings and environment. Human beings are far too complex for a test with a few questions to accurately predict their personality. It takes a long time and dedication to fully know someone’s personality, that’s why our parents and closest friends are the best bet. On the other side of the argument, people do tend to hide parts of their “true” personality from the people around them, only showing them what they want to see. You could say a test of multiple questions could reveal who someone is on the inside.
