Sleep is a very important part of my life. I believe that my sleep habits are healthy thus far in my college experience. I go to sleep the same time every night around 11, give or take one hour. I sleep for 8-10 hours a night depending on when my first class of the day is. I do not take any naps because I sleep so well at night; I don’t need them. Since I do not have any 8 am classes, I sleep in as much as I can. I try not to lose sleep over studying, so I get my work done early. I think that it depends on the individual for how much sleep they need.
A goal for sleep is at least 7 hours for a college student. Some people can function off of less sleep then other people, but a reasonable goal is 7 hours. This gives not only the brain but the body a chance to regroup and get ready for the next day. It so important that the body can rejuvenate to give us energy.
I would like to improve my sleep habits by trying to wake up at the same time every morning to give my body some routine. I would also like to not use my phone before I go to bed because that causes me to go to bed later then I would like. I can achieve this by shutting my phone off, so I’m not tempted to pick it up.
Hi Ariana!
I would agree, it does sound like you get more sleep than the average college student. Many students do sacrifice sleep in order to keep up with work and social opportunities, but this can lead to undesirable side effects, especially for brains that are trying to learn. Lack of sleep can weaken our immune system, slower our reaction time, and cause lapses in our visual attention. Students should, theoretically, find sleep to be a higher priority, since it helps us solidify information learned throughout the day, increase creative thinking, restore our immune system and brain tissue, and help with the growth and development of the body and brain. Your habit of going to bed around the same time and sleeping 8-10 hours is ideal for a college student.
Keep up the healthy sleeping habits!

You seem to be very on top of your sleeping habits! Most college students, myself included, strive for your sleeping habits. Having a routine and maintaining it is important in the modern age nowadays. A lot of people struggle with using their phones before bed. Shutting it off or stopping your usage a half an hour before you plan on sleeping is a great plan. With the amount of sleep you are getting, your body is able to go into REM at least four times a night, which is helping you wake up feeling great and not having to take naps during the day. Getting your work done early is a very smart plan. Getting your work done early is helping you maintain your sleep schedule. Sleep should be a top priority for everyone since it helps heal the mind and body. I like how you mentioned that not everyone has the same sleep schedule, so not everyone should get the recommended 8 hours of sleep.
